North Luffenham
North Luffenham was a Royal Air Force station from 1940 - 1998 when the station was taken over by the British Army and renamed St George's Barracks. When the RAF vacated the base, the pair of gates from the main entrance was donated to the village of North Luffenham. The gates were later erected at the entrance to the village recreation ground. St George's Barracks are currently home to 16 Regt RA, an Air Defence Regiment operating the Army's only low level air defence unit.
St George's Barracks is situated between Edith Weston and North Luffenham in Rutland. It is situated on the south bank of Rutland Water almost central between the towns of Stamford to the east and Oakham to the west. Edith Weston is a small village, with one public house, a small amenities shop, a Church of England Church and a primary school. Service personnel and their families form a large percentage of the local population. North Luffenham village is approximately 5 minutes drive away from the camp; it is also a small village with 2 public houses, a shop, a Church of England Church and a primary school.
At St George’s Barracks there is a gymnasium and swimming pool, which is available for use by serving personnel and their dependants. There is also a new Community Centre on camp with a large newly refurbished child’s soft play area and Internet Suite, which also has an e fax- bluey and webcam facility. The Community Development Worker and HIVE Information Officer are located in this building. There is a weekly programme of events at the Centre and there are fortnightly visits from the local Health Visitor. The newly opened Colours Café serves hot and cold snacks and meals. The 20/Twenty bar is also open seven nights a week.
